  1. Is it really Athena? She looks more medieval saint-like to me. Carey Thomas was not about saints, but she was definitely about medieval.

    She has a key around her neck. I wonder what that's about.

  2. well, I think it's Athena mainly b/c of the owl and the random style of her setting. The other (empty) canopies under her are medieval in keeping with the gothic character of the building and then suddenly rises a pseudo-temple facade with a female figure. Athena is also often depicted with a key (like in the Library of Congress) b/c one needs a key to knowledge.
    I could be wrong...given what I understand of Carey, she was capable of commissioning a figure of herself...
