La Fête Nationale du 14 juillet 2013

I took the opportunity available and ended up in Paris for a whirlwind weekend that ended in the national fireworks. July 14th for us started with a military parade down the Avenue des Champs-Élysées in view of the Arc de Triomphe

secret service simply wouldn't get out of the picture but you can see the giant flag

I've never seen a helicopter parade before but here it is
then we ended up on the banks of the Seine at the foot of the Eiffel Tower. We picnicked there so we saw all the various stages of the Eiffel Tower.

at this point it's twinkling

...and the flag was still there? oops, wrong country. le drapeau tricolore!

Pintia throws a party

on the first night was a Night of Magic (una quemada)

then, on the 2nd night, a round of experimental archaeology

Though I've done lots of pottery, I'd never known I was doing a specific style of pottery with its base firmly on the wheel. The Vacceans threw their pots the opposite way, rim to the wheel...

uncomfortable angle

walking through this public transit tunnel is a bit unsettling given that the outwards force of the barrel vault seems unsupported by the strangely angled walls. we trust in cinder blocks?

Happy Lantern Night

photographing lantern night is basically impossible without a tripod so I present some light painting with minute long exposures

the upperclasswoman stand poised right before all lights are shut off

the lanterns being run out

it was pitch dark, the blue sky is purely long exposure time but check out those freshwomen in line.

The Pynx and the Deme of Melite

I have to admit, I had no idea where I was...all I knew was that it felt like an archaeological site and...there's a pointless gate

I don't think I had realized quite the beautiful view of the akropolis the Pynx had

I am enamoured of drains. This one is rock cut like most of the deme of melite

I am indeed, still in Athens

stairs to the top of a hill where I spotted a pottery sherd...that's right, a grubby unpainted sherd that I of course left there
