Technology

Today is Ada Lovelace Day, an international day of blogging to draw attention to women excelling in technology. You'd think that going to a women's college, I'd be able to catch some women at work with technology...and I didn't..other than myself working with technology. Though not because women in technology do not exist or matter, they do and they're wonderful. The computer science department of Bryn Mawr has so many interesting projects and constantly provides an alternate to the usual male dominance of the field.
So instead, I present what the modern advance of technology (also driven by women) has rendered useless.

"We're fired up, can't take it no more, want money for (schools/housing/ healthcare/jobs), not for war!"

2nd half of protest post:
the march: beginning and end

part of the One World contingent with a Palestinian "coffin"

the first show of security was the bicycle squad, police cars and the mounted park police.

The ubiquitous counter protesters (I believe these are "Freepers") with direct personal attacks on their signs. Note that the protest did not go into Arlington cemetery but around using the unhallowed street, these guys with their sign are on actual cemetery grounds.

marching around the Pentagon

in Arlington the riot police showed up

You can't continue, you can't turn around. KBR (formerly part of Halliburton) with a peace sign

Protesters were allowed to place the coffins at the very doorstep of KBR

but at General Electric, the police began to block any access and movement. I particularly liked how this protest brought out a number of different types of people, from the bored college white kid on spring break to this observant women in niqab

Adrienne and Anna had to get out of the way as the police line advanced to lead us to stay on the sidewalk.

"We Need Jobs and Education, Not Wars and Occupation.”

went to the March on the Pentagon for End of Occupation (focus on Iraq, Palestine and Afghanistan) in Washington, DC. Though I disagreed with some specific points and was unsure about some others including the efficacy of a march on the weekend (the Federal district of DC is like a ghost town on weekends), it was a pleasant peaceful march. A fair number of people showed up.

Pre-March Rally Action:

the "coffins" symbolic gestures of civilian deaths that were eventually placed as near as possible to the doorsteps of the major defense contractors

old hippies like these guys aren't too common on the East coast

a busy picture but you can still see the cut-outs of Picasso's Guernika.

probably the sign I agreed with the most

art not war

one of the most elaborate signs with red plastic soldiers and everything

Glenmede: Interior

main staircase

Arches painted nicely!

wooden spiral staircase

I'm not entirely sure where my card reader hid itself so I'm posting pictures of Glenmede from last spring when I spent more than 2 hours bewildering the residents, photographing details, and battling lightbulbs and shaky, shaky hands. Most of my pictures are of molding, stained glass, paintings, and lamps. i'll be sparing you all the paintings and molding details...
